Hi! Welcome to Healthily Informed. :)
I’m starting this blog with a recipe for healthier chocolate chip cookies.
You may be wondering… What makes these cookies healthier? Well, while these may not be the healthiest cookies in the history of the universe, they are slightly better than your average store-bought cookie.
The first and most obvious reason is that they don’t have any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
There are also NO artery-clogging partially hydrogenated oils in these. Because instead of using margarine or shortening like many recipes tend to do, I decided to use real butter instead. And even though butter can get a bad rep sometimes, at the end of the day, it is way less processed than margarine. And not only that, but there’s a number of studies that show the benefits of consuming butter. Especially grass-fed butter.(1, 2 ,3)
I also used pure cane sugar in this recipe. You see, more than half of the granulated sugar in the US comes from sugar beets; rather than sugar canes, like most people tend to think.(4) And the thing is, 95% of the sugar beets grown in the US are genetically engineered.(5) So if you want to avoid GMOs, but aren’t quite ready to give up granulated sugar yet, pure cane sugar is the way to go. :)
So like I said… these may not be the HEALTHIEST cookies ever, but that’s ok. Because they’re delicious!
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup grass-fed butter, melted
- ½ cup cane sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- ¾ cup dark chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 330F degrees.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, vanilla, and eggs.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and combine thoroughly. The mixture will be quite thick.
- Add chocolate chips, and stir until combined.
- Roll the dough into 23-24 balls, and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. These cookies don't spread much. :)
- Bake for 10-12 minutes. Allow to cool on the cookie sheet for approximately 15 minutes, and enjoy!
